About the Chorale…

The Fort Street Chorale is community-based chorus which welcomes singers of all levels, abilities, backgrounds and faiths. Under the dynamic leadership of Ann Marie Koukios, Artistic Director & Conductor, and Glenn Burdette, Assistant Conductor & Accompanist, the Chorale is dedicated to singing some of the greatest sacred works in the Western canon.

The choir was formed in 1971 under the direction of Edward Kingins. In December of 1978, the Chorale performed Handel’s Messiah for the first time. The December performance of Messiah in downtown Detroit became an annual tradition that continues to this day.

In the spring, the Chorale mounts another concert; works performed at this time of year have included the Mozart and Fauré Requiems, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater.

The spirit of the Chorale was captured in the 1984 documentary Miracle on Fort Street, which was broadcast nationwide and is still available on YouTube.
